Rackshack servers
3 days ago I ordered a new Rackshack Dual Xeon server. The server has gone down 2 of the 3 days I have had it. Today it has been down for over 12 hours now without any response from their tech support.
Is this normal for them. Just wanted to make sure before I transfer actual domains to them, so far looking pretty pathetic.

Never had a chance to do anything box goes down faster than a Vietnamese whore and no response from them on fixing it. I would think they could give me a new server but they just ignore my emails.

Any time I have a "serious" issue (server lock up for example) RS typically reboots within 20 minutes but they don't provide any other support. Wouldn't have it any other way but that is definitely not for most. |

Well I guess your right. probably my bad they finally swapped it out for a different one. Jason was kind enought to offer me free hosting till the end of the month. Much appreciated I will see how the swapped server works now.
Have been growing traffic fast lately though and I am going to have to take Jason up on a new server deal in a couple of weeks though. Thanks again

Rackshack sucks.
I have a 10 meg line there, that thing does in fact go down often. Their routing people stink and we even had an incident where we were blocked out of our own server until they came in in the morning to unblock us (they considered our monitoring software to be an attack and banned our IP block). We've endured unexplained outages (my theory is that they tripped over one of our cables once). We also had a bad fiber cut IN THEIR FACILITY! The last trouble ticket I had was unanswered for over three days. I even added comments in there regularly like "hello, do you feel like doing your job?" thinking someone there would eventually get the point. They didn't. Good thing we don't DEPEND on these people. Our hosting strategy is to DIVERSIFY. We don't depend on any one company too much. Learned our lesson the Verio way. Right now we are moving servers to Webair and Swiftdesk. Unfortunately, the new mix is heavily global crossing, but they do kick ass and they're cheap. Plus the new facilities at webair have serious backup plans. Hosting isn't easy, but it is incredibly important. Think about it, if your stuff goes down, how bad do you get beaten up by your affiliates, tgp trades, traffic trades, customers, etc.? If your server is down, does it matter that you have the best content and 100,000 clicks a day coming in? MY advice is to lose rackshack and get a real host. There are a TON out there, just pick one. Too many good ones to get stuck with a bad one. And BUY MY CONTENT! |

I have a number of Rackshack servers...they are now going on a minimum of 75 days with no downtime whatsoever. Yes, the first week with my first server, I probably had 30 reboots done. But once you get the hang of updating the files and adjusting all of your apache configurations, their simply isn't a better deal for top rate networks and bandwidth.
The best way to learn is go to the users forum. Practically every problem possible has already happened to someone else...and the solution can usually be found as well. Or post on the live chat..someone is always there, welling to give a helping hand. |

Well I agree with Virtumike that being diversified is the best approach.
I did that with the billing companies and it saved me when Ibill quit paying. It is nice to shop around and find the best service for your needs. I was with Rackspace.com a couple of years ago ( I think they charged 6 a gig back then) but their support was unbelivable. They were just too expensive though. Eternal saying is you get what you pay for.

I wouldn't have a production server on Rackshack. It's true, some people go a long time without problems, but many others get stuffed in various ways. It seems to be pot luck.
That said, you can't beat the price. For hosting something like hi bandwidth TGP pages, it's a great solution, but I wouldn't put a large money generating site on one.

See you'd think it would be great for cheap sites like galleries and AVS and crap like that that you don't really care about. But in reality, the higher traffic TGP's don't tolerate failure. If The Hun saw your site down for a quickie they'd pull it. Enough times and you get blacklisted. Once that happens you're fucked up fuck creek without a fucking paddle. And don't think anyone else wouldn't pull you for being down also!
That's the tradeoff on your cheap traffic. You have to find a nice spot in there where you're making money off the site and get your hosting cost to a minimum while providing a reasonable service. It's hard, but that's business. Like it or not, you're in business. And since you're in business, BUY MY CONTENT! |

The best source of info about RS is their own discussion group, where webmasters post about their servers.
You'll find literally hundreds of users (like me) who think they are better than any so-called "premium" isp. 24 hour support (for reboot only!) always reachable by phone or chat. Take a look at their network page. No other host can match the number and quality of connections they have to the Internet, because RS is (I think?) the biggest. I've had them about 4 months by the way. I monitor the servers 24x7 with software and I have been down about 20 minutes in those 4 months. I have a second mirrored server with them I use for TGP and can switch to that server if I am down 15 minutes, which has never happened. RS is the best but you have to be a linux admin. If you are not, you can hire 1 for $100/month in that same discussion group. And if you are neither a linux admin nor willing to pay for one, don't waste your time with RS. Their discussion group is littered with the sob stories of those cases. |

Rackshack sucks balls. I had one of there servers for 2 months. The thing could not handle 100k per day of gallery traffic. I was never able to reach the 400 gigs per month, thing was always down.
Im with www.oxeo.com now, we do about 14mbps with NO problem! Ray

for what it is worth, I pulled a little over 100K in a day of my hun tgp last week, and it used about 2-3% of my system resources on a dedicated RS server, and ran up to about 12 M/bs all day. |

Wanna know how much Rackshack sucks?
In less than an hour from my last post about how much they suck, MY SERVER WAS UNREACHABLE there. My graph hit the floor at roughly 6am. How's that for timing? Again, good thing I don't depend on those idiots. |

Nothing beats RS prices. But like it have been said before if you do not know how to operate on linux systems or if you can't afford to hire a sys admin stay away.
You are just asking for troubles.
