But I'm not successful, so take my words with a grain of salt.

In that case, maybe we could both learn something from the people who are about a thousand times as successful as we are? I know you've been around a while, so maybe you're in a similar position as I. Maybe if I quit arguing politics and you quit talking shit about a typo, if we both shut up and LISTEN, we might learn something?

Assuming he doesn't get into one of his political rants, yes.

Like many said in this thread you have to be dedicated and put your money back into your business instead of spending it. I quit doing porn full time over three years ago to start a business and I was still making enough money from rebills and sales still coming in to live off so I reinvested every penny I made. I dont think it's very easy to grow a non internet business if you don't reinvest. Back when I was doing porn I couldn't even find enough stuff to reinvest the money I was making.

Great thread.. just going to bed now but will revisit tomorrow and post. Raymor, were you referring to me Brad? If so I'm flattered but still have a long way to go on my journey. :-)

Ahh.... didn't know about those because I don't even bother opening political threads. My comment was based on his contributions to business/technical threads.

Loved the ARS rewards store back in the day, finished off my kitchens in two different houses, and tons of toys with their reward points. The good old days :thumbsup

My business has paid the bills for 15 years in a row, so we must be doing some things right, but we never moved beyond 400 square feet. What's the difference between a businessman who feeds himself and one who takes it to the next level? In fifteen years we've grown to 3 1/2 people and are considering hiring another. I'd love to hear from the big guys what they did differently from the 95% who are "successful" and will never expand beyond the spare bedroom.

I'm the only thing that holds me back. I've worked alone for 15yrs and have no intention on changing things. I'm simply not interested in "expanding" if that means having employees and driving somewhere to go to work, no matter what the return is. I dont need to make millions to be happy. I'm the only person in my office and I make "only" a few hundred thousand per year, and I'm perfectly ok with that.

I dont have to answer to anyone or deal with anyone's problems or incompetence. :thumbsup

It's the same in any field. Some want to be the manager, the district manager, the regional manager, the divisional vice president and so forth. Some want to punch out exactly at 5:00 and before 5:01. There could be comfortabler stops all along the way depending on who's driving.

Many are like you, and I can't say I blame them.

In the end, it really comes down to what you want out of life.

Diversification isn't necessarily what made him successful.

Finding what "clicked" for him did. Porn did ok for him. But when he got into his current biz he really took off.

I'm not sure he even spends any time at all on the porn biz anymore. His bikini site is pretty much dead traffic-wise.

So I'm guessing that it's not so much diversifying as it was that he found something that was a perfect fit for him and he concentrated on making that a success instead of diversifying and diluting his time and energy.

Unless he diversified and made other things in addition to that, his growth potential would be extremely limited.

Actually the computer 'reader for the blind' market has been a massive source of revenue for one of the better inventors of the last 100 years. He turned it into a gold mine and continued releasing some amazing other inventions as well. Many tech-savvy people know exactly who Ray Kurzweil is, in part because of his computers for the blind inventions ;)

But he is still no Steve Jobs, and that's what DWB said.

I have run into a few very successful guys in our biz who have long since retired who don't even know how to use photoshop or put down a line of html.. blows my mind. From what I can see the guys that get a decent lump of cash to go and hire the right people to do everything to propel their winning ideas forward seem to cross the finish line first.

Relentless 06-11-2012 10:25 AM

I've never been a billionaire. However, having had the chance to work with extremely successful people in three completely different industries during my life, the biggest thing that they all had in common was something Nathan pointed out: Timing

A billionaire with a capital "B" once told me he thinks business is like surfing. There are a lot of people capable of riding waves. The guys who are able to go huge successfully are the ones who are best at picking the right wave at the right time, not necessarily the guys who have the best balance or the fanciest surf board.

I have seen his statement proven true over and over again. Whether you call that luck or skill or a combination of the two, that's the difference between having 3 employees and having 3000 according to him.

You do like to argue semantics....

What DWB said was "Everything Jobs said in that speech is true, but if Steve Jobs had only invented a braille computer for the blind, none of us would know who he is" and yet the fact is Ray Kurzweil is quite famous, extremely successful and has earned a slew of recognition... mostly because of exactly that invention. The point being, if your idea and timing is right, even with a very small pool you can be a monster of a fish.

Kurzweil has some great stage pianos - always wanted one when i was still playing
