all my stuff is custom, i prefer it, plus i know my code is good for high traffic sites, not relying on a bunch of plugins to make the theme properly function. ive had to fix a few themes from other developers on here because of the way they coded the themes, not following the proper wordpress standards.

Ready-made themes are fine if you just need something up fast and don’t care that half the internet looks the same. For a lot of small projects or MVPs they’re honestly good enough.
But the moment you actually want the site to feel like yours and not just another ThemeForest clone, custom starts making a lot more sense. Plus the scaling part is real - adding something new later on a custom build is usually cleaner than fighting a theme’s limitations

themeforest most of the code behind the themes is aweful. they may be pretty on the front end, but none of them follow proper standards. and most require 8-10 plugins to even function, my themes require no plugins and are used on sites with millions of visitors. i prefer not requiring any plugins. maybe a seo plugin, but even then i build mine with proper a11y and seo json ld data if the person doesnt want to use a seo plugin.

For adult sites I would choose theme vs custom by the bottleneck. If the money is just testing traffic, use a clean theme and launch.

If the bottleneck is conversion, content workflow, billing, search, feeds/API, or high traffic, custom starts paying for itself because you stop fighting the theme.
