I've never been that way. I like nice things but I never had enough easy money to buy anything. I paid my way thru university and after that began working online. There was a time when I ate out 3 times a day ever day, but that was more for convenience than anything else. That all ended when I bought my house. I drive a Toyota Corolla because it drives well and rarely breaks down. I know of guys my age still living with their parents who drive $45,000 vehicles. Why not buy a house with that $45k instead.

With that said, when I buy big items I try to buy quality things. For example, instead of buying crappy furniture that I'll have to replace, I buy good stuff. It costs more upfront but actually saves money in the long run and is more satisfying, I think.

But it's probably different for you Roger. You said your dad is a millionaire from his contruction company. I would probably have been a bigger spender if I could fall back on my parents if I lost my shirt. Without having that security, I don't take those risks. Sometimes you only get one chance to scrape some money together in this life. Not to get that confused with risks such as investments.... those I am willing to take.
