it's like driving without a seatbelt. sure people who wear seatbelts will still die in car crashes - but nowhere near the same amount of people will die as if we didn't have or wear seatbelts. Yes a couple of people will die BECAUSE of the seatbelt too - but I'd rather loose 2 people with a seatbelt on than 100 without one on.
Same thing with handguns and assault rifles.

I'd rather people died through personal choice than through mandatory laws - but hey - I've got my own mind, I'm over 21 so why should 'I' be allowed to choose what I want to do? Guns are in existence - therefore criminals will have them - I'd rather have a .22 rim fire in my pocket 'just in case' than get popped. It's all about education - I've been trained in firearms. Every single person who wants a firearm should be fully trained (at their own expense) in it's use and what happens with mis-use.
