You're doing something wrong man.
The standard mode will work just like a regular TV. Black bars on the side to make up the difference. When watching wide screen movies it will also obviously give bars at the top.
When watching widescreen movies or shows, the best mode is zoom. It zooms in to the main core of the viewing screen, which with widescreen movies works perfectly.
Put in a widescreen movie and play with the different modes. You'll find the right on. Or go see the guys at Best Buy or any electronics store, point them to the TV you have and ask them how to get widescreen to look properly.
