The practice of forcing religious minorities to wear different clothes and badges comes from the Islamic Dhimma practice from the 9th Century or earlier, and it was this practice which gave Hitler (an admirer of Islam) the idea of forcing Jews to wear the yellow star. At some points in history, Christians have also force Jews to distinguish themselves by use of clothing and badges.
