PS: Both men were undeniably among the grandest minds of all Human history. Though both made seminal contributions to the development of Nuclear energy, remember that #1 was #2's boss. When the destructive potential (the horror) of what they had created became apparent, both men appreciated their implicit responsibility in the unleashing of a monster on the Human species. The difference: Man #1 dropped out of the game, did little more than write (arguably ineffectual though poignant) letters for the rest of his career, was, during MCcarthy Madness, accused of being a communist (necessitating that his old friends and employers write letters on his behalf to clear him of the charges if not the opprobrium) and became so obscure and muddled a figure in History (both American and Academic) that the true scope and importance of his contributions are largely un-appreciated. In contrast, Man#2 realized that the best way to fight Evil was to remain an active member in the political and scientific communities were the fate of Evil would be decided. He remained powerful, respected, and influential. His later achievements in Quantum Physics not only dwarfed the work done in New Mexico, they helped to illuminate a new realm of research and enquiry in Physics that would excite and inspire not only Physicists, but the common man. He became a figure in the mass culture, and managed, by the end of his life, to have left as the basic message of his legacy the eternally ponderable: "Shit happens".
