After reading most of the replies so far - one thing I noticed is everyone seems to focus on whether a design converts or not. Ya'll seem to be denegrating anything that's "artsy" and doesn't sell.

But...

Although much of what we do IS business and for-profit....along with our commercial paysites, many of us also own/operate free sites too. In which case, a design needn't be judged on whether it converts or not.

People are sometimes too quick to slag a designer or graphic artist based solely on a design's ability (or lack thereof) to convert. Saying a person's design talents or capabilities suck (because they don't convert) denegrates someone who may have taken a lot of formal design training and courses over the years, has a lot of experience and background...and is actually quite talented in many respects.

Recommendations from others are good, of course (if you don't mind sorting through favoritism or fake nicks). But nothing beats a great online portfolio that anyone can easily check out for themselves.
