Ya... if you do anything apart from getting the cops involved right off, I'm thinking you should start by giving the guy a call.
It's possible he didn't do it. It's possible his "girlfriend" is actually now his "ex-girlfriend", and a bit of a conniving and vindictive bitch.
Hell, anything's possible.... best to give him a call and figure it out for yourself. If he's a prick, bring it to the next level.... you know where the cat lives and works... so many (legal) ways to handle it at that point.
