Anyone who's a total wreck, hooked on drugs and such can be "saved" by basically any crackpot religion. They get you when your down, that's fucking 101 in recruiting anyone for anything idiotic (U.S Army).

You become a member of the church when your born, ofcource you cant do much about it then. So your parent fill your head with their beliefs and you grow up believing some dude in the sky just waved his fucking magic wand and *poof* there was the universe.

I mean g'damn.

Good you turned your life around, there's better ways to do it though.
