Not just the produce. I had an office a couple of blocks outside the Carmel Market in Tel Aviv and most mornings I used to pick something up from an old-style bakery there. A fantastic selection of olives too, really cheap compared with the US or Europe. "Zhoug" (excuse the phonetic spelling) is a
very hot Yemenite paste I remember fondly.
Actually the produce, so-so. It was certainly fresh, but the choice was quite limited. I was there 20 years ago, so maybe things have changed, but then imports weren't allowed, so if it wasn't grown locally, you didn't get it.
Eating on the run is the big thing in Israel, so shawarma and felafel stands everywhere. Not such hot restaurants, which made my life difficult when I was writing reviews for Dvar and didn't want to put down every place I went. Some exceptions: one I'm sure is still good is the oddly named "Philadelphia" near the Nablus Gate in Jerusalem and pretty much any of the fish places in Jaffa port: try the barbunia at Barbunia
