Jimmy, a young English boy, playing near the edge of a river with his magical talking gold flute, Freddie (or Fweddie, as Jimmy so fondly referred to him), board a boat that beckons to them. As it drifts out to sea, the evil Witchiepoo, seeking Freddie to add to her collection of magical possessions, casts a spell over the boat. After escaping the boat and swimming to the shore of the enchanted Living Island, Jimmy is rescued by its mayor, H.R. Pufnstuf, who also happened to be an orange dragon dressed in cowboy duds. Pufnstuf befriends the young lad and takes him under his wing.
