UPS = Uninterruptible Power Supply. So long as it has sufficient battery capacity your equipment will probably never know that the mains power has disappeared. With commercial ops there's usually a UPS to power things for long enough to get the generator going.
When I ran an ISP we sized the UPS for at least 20 mins runtime in the event of a total power failure.
