RewriteRule ^/gallery/(.*)/(.*)/index.html index.php?picsdir=$1&user=$2 [QSA,L]

will redirect the url say
http://gallery/pics/user/index.html and run index.php script
with picsdir = pics and user = user

the first (.*) = $1
the 2nd (.*) = $2
