Yet the second I see an animal hurt, mistreated, maimed, killed, etc. I get filled with this feeling of complete rage and disgust.

THe same about me. That go from my childhood. Always sorry for the animals and never care about the people.
I think that people are so cruel in all their acts and thoughts. Wars, killing others and even killing animals.
An animal will never kill if it is not for food or for defence.
