May 1 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc., the most-used Internet search engine, expressed concerns to the European Commission over Microsoft Corp.'s new Internet browser, which directs Web surfers to Microsoft's search site.
Google raised the concern as part of a European Commission investigation into Vista, the next version of Microsoft's Windows operating system, Steve Langdon, a spokesman for Mountain View, California-based Google, said today in an interview.
``In those discussions, we have expressed our concerns that Microsoft's approach to setting search defaults in IE 7.0 benefits Microsoft while taking away choice from users,'' Langdon said.
Microsoft is ``fully committed'' to supporting search-engine options in Internet explorer and will ensure users can easily choose from a very long list, Microsoft spokeswoman Stacy Drake McCredy said in an e-mailed statement.
The tussle highlights Google's concern that Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft may be able to gain Internet traffic by directing people to its own search engine. Microsoft handled 11 percent of U.S. searches in March, compared with Google's 49 percent, according to market research Nielsen//NetRatings.
Shares of Google fell $19.04, or 4.6 percent, to $398.90 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading. They have fallen 3.8 percent this year. Microsoft shares rose 14 cents to $24.29 and have fallen 7.1 percent this year.
Google brought up the concerns over Internet Explorer with the U.S. Justice Department and European Commission, the New York Times reported today.

I am looking forward to MSN's PPC engine getting more traffic. I am expecting waay less hitbot hits from them since the traffic will primarily come from the desktops of relative web newbs. Their traffic will be like a combination of AOL'ers and googlers. That's a nice combo if you ask me.
I can't wait for the deployment of Vista!
