Several reasons. Firstly, the ship was scheduled to arrive by late afternoon...so I'd gotten down to the canal early to find the best place to get some shots. No one knew what the delay was - so after waiting a few hours it would have been a total waste of time to simply leave. It would've been a bitch had I found out the next day that I'd left half an hour before it arrived.
And patriotism is part of it, too...sure. The Haida is a significant and historical part of our heritage. I had relatives who served in the Canadian navy and in the merchant marine during WWII...and myself served in the Armed Forces.
Originally the ship was supposed to arrive at Port Weller during daylight hours...so I had hopes of getting good shots while it was still light. The day went from being a photo-op.....to a quest.
