It's possible to make a lot of money, but not by throwing it around. If you're putting $5k into ANYTHING you'd better know what you're doing.
As far as getting hot, exclusive stuff for your members... Get some quotes from other photographers. You might be able to buy what you want cheaper than you can produce it.
