Actually, Pleasure Pays, it was something Serge said to me right after giving me an old-fashioned whipping in a game of chess played while he and his family were vacationing in Fort Lauderdale. I
remember that he played the King's Gambit. I'll never forget that he played that peculiar personality-optimized opening because it leads to a wide-open attacking sort of game. You give up your King's Bishop's pawn in exchange for control of the center of the board. I have forever seen Serge's personality framed by that game. He is the King's Gambit.
After the drubbing, we went out to get some lunch. His son told us a few dirty jokes in the car before we discussed the game. At which point Serge said, and I'll never forget these exact words "You should thank God that you didn't play my father."
That was an ominous sign of the afternoon to come. It is also the silly reason why I believed Serge to be religious until now. Most atheists don't say "Thank God". It was as simple as
that.
