In a sense, you're right; however, USA citizens have hijacked the word "Americans" to mean themselves, and in order to avoid confusion other people from the Americas generally do NOT refer to themselves as Americans.
On a related note, the actual name of Mexico is Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos, the "Mexican United States".
