Once you start adding people you know, you tend to spend hours looking at their pictures, going through their friends to see if theres anyone you know, playing with your profile to make it look pretty, reading comments on peoples' pages, leaving comments on peoples' pages... once you get sucked in, you have to reply to your messages at least once a day and see if anyone added new pics!
