People are petty by nature. And lazy. For the most part, it's easier to try to find dirty secrets, start rumours and trash talk someone in an effort to bring someone down to a level that's lower than your own... rather than to try and work hard and raise yourself to a level that's higher than someone else's.
One method is rewarding to a true winner, the other is rewarding to a true loser.
