For one nn sells itself. Also simple does work, its always worked best for me. It's like a photographer trying to simulate "amateur" pics - it goes against the grain to try and actually produce images with rough edges
Another example is a friend who edits a mens mag - he don't want to see any photosets shot on formats larger than 35mm. "Rough" and a bit grainy can be fine - their circulation figures prove it.
