You must understand in that part of the world even up to 120 years ago when husbands died their wives got cremated with them. Even if they weren't dead. 200 hundred years ago often times baby girls would be killed or left out in the wild because the father wanted a boy. The word THUG is actually an Indian name for gangs of theives that would rob people who were traveling and kill them by strangling them with a scarf. This was a little under 100 years ago.
