Even more of a scam in Australia, typical rate for an SMS is 20-25c (Australian) which is about 14-18c in USD. There are specials with lower rates between cells on the same carrier, or free during specific periods etc, but that's the general charge.
Setting up a GSM voice call probably generates more bandwidth and phone/base station chatter than an SMS. What a rip.
