You can get a ticket for going 1 mile over the speed limit, but most cops won't give you one until you are over 10 (except in some circumstances)
In MD - points are given in 10MPH increments - so if you are going 10 - 19 miles over - you get more points/fine than 1 - 9 miles and less than 20 - 29.
If you go tocourt - many judges will reduce your points/fine if you have a good record - so 10-19 becomes 1-9. If you have 1-9 you become PBJ - probation before judgement.
To put this all in prospective - it just isn't worth it to most cops to give you a ticket going 1 - 9 over as he/she can easily find PLENTY of people going 10 - 19 over the speed limit - so why bother.
When I was young and reckless - I got pulled over my share of times, but very rarely got a ticket for speeding - here is how:
1) Cops deal with assholes all day. They don't need people telling them "I wasn't speeding" or stuff like that. You might as well just get out of the car - jump up and down and call the guy corrupt.
2) Believe it or not - pulling some one over - is just as much an inconvenience to them as it is to you. They don't know what awaits them, while you usually do.
3) Pull over to the side of the road (as far right as possible) - roll down your window - and keep your hands on the wheel. If it is dark turn on your dome light.
4) Don't give the cop any slack - no need to insult them either by constantly calling them sir.
5) When they ask for your ID & registration - give them your ID - and look through the glove compartment for the registration. Do not give them your registration - apoligize PROFUSELY for not being able to find it. This works better of course if you don't have it in your glove box.
6) It is no problem for the cop to look up your registration.
7) In MD (this may not work for other states) - they have to write a seperate ticket for each offense) So in theory - he should write you a ticket for speeding a not having your registration.
8) In MD - not having your registration is (or was last time I got one) $15 and no points.
9) Back to the cop dealing with assholes all day. You were nice to the cop. You did what he asked, didn't make up excuses and were considerate about his safety. Cops have DISCRETION - they do not HAVE to give you a ticket.
10) Hopefully, they will say to themselves - this guy was nice (not like the other assholes I deal with all day) - I am going to give him a ticket, but just for not having his registration. That way it will only cost him $15 and no points.
Worse case scenerio - you get two tickets and owe an extra $15.
I found this out by accident after I didn't have my registration being pulled over two times in a row and getting only a ticket for that. I don't know how well it works in other areas, but it worked well for me in MD. I never bothered replcaing my registration as it seemed to work out better that way.
