They're well on the way to doing so right now - that is what the laws that are being passed are dealing with. At some point it's going to happen. They're not going to just let this go on forever; a few state governments that border mexico haven't been enforcing the laws like they should so the federal government will step in and do so.

Yes I have, not that anyone would need to have visited there to understand the situation. A secure fence and an adequate border patrol are all that's needed; even an unorganized group of minute men is having some impact on the problem. The only thing preventing the border from being sealed up effectively is a budget and it's gotta be cheaper to build a fence put up some surveillence cameras and staff a few thousand people than deal with consequences of over ten million criminals.
As you mentioned the current lack of security is a concern for national threats as well, which gives even more incentive to tighten up the borders.
