You have there what is termed a third terminal connection which can be dangerous to those who are unaware.

is it me or does this sound way wrong I did electrical for many years and that sounds like your trying to throw 2 hots on the light.. white is N which carries the load back to the panel.. read what I wrote thats what the prob is
