Check your local zoning laws.
My wife and I looked at some investment properties a couple of months back and one of the places we looked at was located in a housing subdivision. There's no master plan or restrictive covenants for houses in that subdivision. So it wasn't surprising to see one of the houses had 20 foot walls and looked like a desert imperial fortress from Star Wars. Kinda reiterated the need for zoning laws.
