I agree for "grunt work" it's not usually the best choice.
But to answer the question about cropping to a specific size... when you select the crop tool in any of the latest CS Photoshop versions, you should see at the top of the screen a width and height box that you can fill in how many pixel you want to crop to. If you select only one or the other it will resize the image to that as the max dimension. If you select both, it will only let you draw a crop box the aspect ration of the dimensions chosen and will resize the image as soon as you finish the crop.
