That's the whole point. When people are focused on certain things, they tend to oversee other really, really big things. I know of one example where people don't notice the Notre Dame dancing around in a video
This has serious implications though. For example, people on highways tend to not notice it when a car somewhere in front of them is standing still and crash into it (the reason police in most places now park sideways to block the road after an accident - people do notice the lack of tail lights on the object in front of them, because that is what they are looking at).
