With MySQL, you do not normally touch the server settings unless you know precisely what is it that you're trying to achieve. "Finetuning" a server is a very uncommon operation. If there is a performance problem chances are it has something to do with the database structure and the way the client application makes queries and as such, thus the first thing to be done is consulting with a competent
developer, not a system administrator.
