Well, to be honest... it's not so much a matter of caring, but intrigue. People will tell you that it doesn't matter to them what others think, but they do. What others think about you is a good guide to how you're doing... if most people think you're a dumbass, there's probably a reason. If most people think you're a good person, there's probably a reason.
So while a person might not "care" what others think, it's still something that is good to know, in my opinion.
