Oftentimes it isn't the design or layout that makes it.. if you believe in the idea and you get at it even something small can become big.

Promotion definitly helps.. getting recip buttons on galleries that you list in your TGP and managing your TGP, ie, weeding out redirects and popup hounds and other bullshit that will make people not bookmark and not return.

Buying traffic is a great way to jump start a site that is heavy on content and low on ads/trades/etc.. get 'em in and keep 'em there/comming back.. that holds true for any business.
