I've never had an issue getting DVDs sent to me in Calgary - I've had about 75 sent to me over the years.

500 at once will raise flags. But as long as they are run of the mill hardcore or softer it won't be a problem. Just remember the three part rule-of-thumb for what is acceptable in Canada:
1. No mix of violence and sex.
2. Nothing degrading to either sex or the participants.
3. Everyone over 18.

Canada Customs can hold stuff for inspection for up to 30 days. I have had stuff held before, it happens, but never commercial DVDs.

The bigger issue might be taxes/duty. Make sure your paperwork is in order so you don't pay 7% GST plus duty on 500 DVDs as that could be a significant dollar figure. I would talk to a customs broker in advance to make sure the paperwork is correct BEFORE shipping.
