Wishful thinking I suspect: far more user-friendly boards than this still get many more lurkers than participants. Most webmasters apparently prefer to waste half our lives finding everything out for ourselves, rather than exchange even run-of-the-mill information.

A more interesting question might be why people hide behind fake personalities, because if the persona is fake, does the nick matter anyway? We are regularly told that this assh*le or that is really a nice guy when you meet him: why the difference? Maybe the board persona reflects what such a person would like to be like in "real life" if he had the bottle for it
