it all comes from Leviticus from the bible. Man shall not lie down with man, its an abomination.
Of course Leviticus also said that you cant eat pork, shrimp, lobster, touch a pig skin (like a football), etc etc.
But those are too inconvenient to follow, so they just treat gays like shit and figure thats good enough to follow the bible.
