Well as far as I've encountered when flying in and out.

A few months after 9/11 I was pulled out of a checking in line at JFK. They went through my bags with a fine tooth comb and detectors. I nearly missed my flight but this was of little concern to them.

The three Muslim students in front of me were not pulled out of the line.

When I pointed this out and told them that a middle age business man was very unlikely to be a terrorist and Arab looking were. The security official said I was being racist and did not understand the situation.

Also the last time a person on the check out asked you the security questions, were they looking into your eyes or finishing off booking you in? They spew out the same script 1,000 times a day and expect someone to say yes I have a bomb in my case.
