"In the Napster example we have an opportunity to glimpse again what happens when a new, poorly-understood technological innovation begins to impinge on an existing industry. Though the Web itself owes its existence to the same spirit of "free sharing" that spawned Napster, it is only the entry of commercial interests into this new medium which accounts for its success ? and our great enjoyment of it. As the Web?s impact expanded and many established business models became threatened, the challenge to commerce was simple: innovate or die. Today some of these "players" have what seems like too much power. The history of commerce is full of examples of monopolies and ethically questionable corporate behavior. Any idea that we can extricate this tendency from business, while preserving its salutary economic effects, is, again, naive. Companies will do everything they can to compete and succeed. At times, those efforts will run counter to market sentiment...
