Regardless of the content in question, without GUBA the newsgroups would basicly be an unknown for the vast majority of typical internet users. Thanks to GUBA a large chunk of everyday users who would not know a newsgroup reader if it jumped out of the screen and wacked them off are being exposed to it and educated about not having to join sites.

That is a very odd argument.
Newsgroups are wastelands now of span, illegal content and gods-knows-what-else. So claiming a program has "opened people's eyes" doesn't work here ... you could say that Internet Explorer should be thanked for allowing millions to find porn sites (just an example!).
But whatever your opinion, you can't possible claim that GUBA is doing a public service - as if they only exist to "enlighten the public". I'd love to see someone representing them argue this in court - it would be the laugh of the day!
