If you're running Kazaa, take it off. If you MUST use Kazaa, use Kazaa Lite. The regular Kazaa will take resources away when it feels that you're not using your system.

Remove a lot of the crap programs you're running. Click on START, RUN, and type in MSCONFIG. In MSCONFIG, go to Startup. Those are all the programs you haev running on startup. Remove ANYTHING you don't need. YOu can actually remove EVERYTHING. If you're running a server on your system, leave that in there, but that's it. Everything else, open it yourself.

Other than that, I'd also recommend to add more RAM. With XP, there's a big difference in performance between 256M and 512M. The cost of 256M more is so little these days, go far it.

Try that and post the results.
