I started in this business in 2002 with 30 euros and I'm still around, you really need motivation, time, interests and reinvest your profits back into your business instead of spending it all. Especially in the beginning. I've learned to not go under my own prices per project or hour, If I feel my time or product is worth that much I will quote that price for it. Of course, there are exceptions for friends and or business partners who've helped you out in the paste and have build a good relationship up with. You have to take and give to come anywhere.
