Geezz I've never heard of 5 shots at once if they were all just the routine. I'd be afraid that if the child had a reaction you wouldn't be able to figure out what he reacted too.
The routine shots for 12-15 months are MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b), IPV (inactivated polio virus), PCV7 (pneumococcal conjugate). Somewhere before 18 months they give a 4th DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis).
They must of been trying to get them in all in one visit. I don't think mine ever got more than 2 at a time when they were young and then the IPV was giving by mouth.
BTW...both my parents are in the medical profession. My mother is in charge of infectious disease control at a group of area hospitals. She'd likely of freaked just like you and the doctor.
