The first generation of consoles came with a faulty drive.

By the time it was a recognized problem by Microsoft, most people with the issue had run out of their warranty with both Microsoft & Best Buy.

So it was basically a "fix it yourself or buy a new one" scenario.

Worked out very well for Bill Gates. Not so much for a LOT of consumers.

EDIT: not only that but if you did have it under warranty, you still had to pay shipping to get it fixed. This was like $90, so you may as well buy a new one.
