As I understand it works like this:
In the first sunrise period companies needed to send in documenation which proofs that they own a trademark on the name they want. That period has ended.
The second period is for companies that want to get a domain that matches their company and/or trade name. They also need to send in documenation to proof that.
If you applied for domains for the 1st or 2nd sunrise, but did not send in documentation, you will not get the domain anyway, and you will not get back your pre-registration fees.
The first company that applied who sends in valid proof of ownership of trademark/tradename will get the domainname.
After that the normal registration will open, and you can apply for all the domain names that are not taken.

And what about generic terms domains? Nobody can own a trademark for them.
