Absolutely we need someone to hate. We need a common enemy to rally around. What could be more obscure, longer lasting or unwinnable as a 'war' against terror?
We had the cold war that taught us to hate russians and get the people behind a singular cause. Running for almost half the time of the cold war we also had the "war on drugs"(Thanks Nixon.

) which is essentially a war by the government against its own people. Now we have the war on terror that people can rally behind. Everyone saw the hit we took on 9/11. That is something the entire nation can get behind without really thinking things out.
Senator Crockett: Let me tell you a little something about 'The People' Phil; you lock any ten of them in a room, they may not elect a leader, but I guarantee they'll pick someone to hate. -Senator Crockett (Witch Hunt)
