The kid committed a crime, a felony. He has to be investigated for that crime.
I doubt the Secret Service is gonna actually charge him with anything and the kid will get some necessary help.
But when a crime is committed, especially something like this it should be reported. The principal I'm sure was following procedure by notifying the proper authorities, and then the "proper authorities" were following procedure.
And according to the article the agent investigating is the "resident" agent in charge in Providence. So it is not like they sent someone from Washington to do the investigation.

umm what crime was commited ? if i write a "FICTIONAL" account of a perfect day , how is that any different than a science fiction writer's fictional account of a space battle.. some of stephen king's characters had quite innapropriate wished of bodily harm to well known people, i dont see them investigating him..
