I guess that when ICQ was new, there was the novelty value and people weren't getting buried in messages. But now between the people who never show as online and the ones who always do (setup so they never display "away" or "n/a") you haven't a clue what is their real status, so no way to know if someone is ignoring you or if ICQ has screwed up again.
Anyway, it has gone from being one of favorite tools to something I never switch on unless I am asked. People who are easy to get hold of on ICQ usually handle their emails well too (and vice versa), and least with email it's easy to glance through my sent box and see who I'm waiting on.
