It's obvious that there must be a way to break out of the "filter".
I would offer that one thing that will certainly do it is a heavily trusted backlink.
Think viral content. Probably take in 100k links in a couple weeks, but they often rank within 30 days. New domains. They've avoided aging delay, sandbox, et al. How?
A few (one?) heavily trusted backlink(s). A CNN, a peer-reviewed .edu.
